Protege GLR Perennial Ryegrass was selected for improved turf quality, improved gray leaf spot resistance, dark green color, and a high percentage of neotyphodium endophytes. 524 plants were selected from a nursery of 1488 plants after a severe outbreak of gray leaf spot at Adelphia, New Jersey in 2003.

Only the plants with the best floret fertility and freedom form disease were harvested to create this new synthetic variety that is expected to be one of the top performers in the new NTEP trial.
